Why would a physician leave an established academic career to open an outpatient practice? For Dr. Osman Ahmed, the answer was the opportunity to bring minimally invasive treatments to more patients.
In a recent appearance on the Becker’s Healthcare Podcast, our own Dr. Ahmed discussed the growth of outpatient interventional radiology, the decision that changed his career, and the satisfaction he finds in practicing medicine on his own terms.
The episode, “The Growth of Outpatient Interventional Radiology with Dr. Osman Ahmed,” offers a look at the thinking behind Joint & Vascular Institute—and the growing interest in outpatient embolization.

Why Outpatient Embolization Is Growing
During the conversation, Dr. Ahmed described significant growth in outpatient embolization—a minimally invasive treatment that uses imaging to intentionally block blood flow to a targeted area.
As Dr. Ahmed explained, these procedures were traditionally performed in hospitals for conditions such as bleeding or tumors. Their applications have since expanded to include benign conditions such as an enlarged prostate, hemorrhoids, and certain musculoskeletal conditions.
That expansion is helping introduce more patients to treatment options they may not have heard of before. Dr. Ahmed highlighted particular interest in musculoskeletal procedures among patients whose previous therapies have not provided sufficient relief.
From Academic Medicine to Outpatient Practice
For Dr. Ahmed, the growth of musculoskeletal embolization became a turning point.
He described being an early adopter of these procedures and helping establish a program at the University of Chicago. Through that experience, he came to believe that an outpatient center offered the right setting for the care he wanted to provide.
After reaching the rank of professor, Dr. Ahmed chose to leave his position and start his own practice.
The move gave him greater autonomy over how he practiced medicine. It also created an opportunity to reach more patients. In the interview, he explained that his own practice allows him to treat more people than he could in his previous university setting.
Bringing Care to More Communities
Dr. Ahmed also discussed the practice’s expansion from Libertyville to Rockford, along with its most recent location in Munster. He credited the demand for these procedures as a driving force behind that growth.
Our own Dr. Mikin Patel has roots in Rockford. Together, Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Patel coordinate clinic visits and procedure days to serve patients across our communities.
That growth reflects why we started Joint & Vascular Institute: to bring specialized care closer to home. Learn more about the practice’s philosophy.
Finding Purpose in a Changing Healthcare Landscape
The conversation also touched on physician burnout, career decisions, and advice for emerging medical leaders.
Dr. Ahmed’s message was hopeful. Despite the pressures facing healthcare, he described medicine as a rewarding profession for those who love the work.
For him, opening a practice was a way to continue doing what he enjoys while gaining more control over how he delivers care. For Dr. Ahmed, that independence has helped him continue doing the work he loves while reaching more patients.
