Dr. Osman Ahmed is a pioneer in the field of image-guided interventions and a global leader in genicular artery embolization (GAE)—a groundbreaking, nonsurgical treatment for knee osteoarthritis. He was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to perform GAE and the very first to introduce it in the Midwest. Formerly a professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Ahmed has performed hundreds of GAE procedures and is actively involved in multiple clinical trials advancing the science of embolization.
In addition to his work at the Joint and Vascular Institute, Dr. Ahmed recently joined the University of Utah as adjunct faculty, where he will teach, mentor, and collaborate with their expanding Interventional Radiology team alongside Dr. Mikin Patel. Their combined expertise is poised to further strengthen the program’s academic and clinical impact.
Dr. Ahmed is also the founder of Flow Medical, a startup focused on innovative catheter technologies for pulmonary embolism (PE) treatment. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and remains deeply engaged in the academic community, serving as Deputy Editor for JVIR (Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology) and Associate Editor for CVIR Endovascular, the Arab Journal of IR, and Applied Radiology. He is frequently invited to speak at major national and international conferences, where he has earned a respected reputation as a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in the field.
Dr. Ahmed earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his internship at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He trained in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Chicago Medicine and completed his fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Driven by one goal—empowering patients with real alternatives—Dr. Ahmed says, “One of the greatest parts of my job is offering patients options they haven’t heard of before—real alternatives to surgery. Seeing them recover quicker and return home sooner makes everything worthwhile.”
